Community Emergency Response Teams - CERT
Medical Explorer Post 4077 has been asked to serve as a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to back-up local EMS in large community events such as university football games, graduations, and community events such as the San Marcos community celebration - Sights and Sounds of Christmas.
There are training requirements to be a CERT volunteer. We offer training by the Hays County Emergency Preparation directors in both fall and spring semesters. Medical Explorers can participate in further more advanced CERT training outside of our regular meetings. These classes may prepare the volunteer to be a shelter manager during hurricane evacuation, as well as other responsibilities. Ask your medical explorer advisors for information about further training opportunities.
Typically, our CERT responsibilities are limited to times when more extensive training as EMT's or First Aid are needed. Some Medical Explorers may participate in the CERT call-out program by individual decision.
Being a trained CERT volunteer through the U.S. Homeland Security will look good on a professional resume and application for further study as a health professional. You may find that some of your health professions faculty are also CERT trained volunteers.
