Type Locality

Pecos River about 7 km NE of Roswell, Chaves Co., New Mexico (Gilbert and Chernoff in: Chernoff et al. 1982).

 

Etymology/Derivation of Scientific Name

 

 

Synonymy

Notropis simus pecosensis is likely a unique species (Hubbs et al. 2008).

U.S. distribution: Pecos River in New Mexico and Texas (Chernoff et al. 1982; Hubbs et al. 2008).

 

Texas distribution: Pecos River (Chernoff et al. 1982; Hubbs et al. 2008).

 

Abundance/Conservation status (Federal, State, NGO)

State Threatened (Texas); Hubbs et al. (2008) listed species as Extirpated in Texas. Listed as Endangered by the American Fisheries Society; categories of threats: present or threatened destruction, modification, or reduction of habitat or range; disease or parasitism; other natural or anthropogenic factors that affect the existence of this species, including impacts of nonidigenous organisms, hybridization, competition, and/or predation; and a narrowly restricted range (Jelks et al. 2008). Page and Burr (1991) noted N. simus pecosensis recognized as a threatened subspecies.
