Etymology/Derivation of Scientific Name
Notropis – ridged or
keeled back; a misnomer, probably due to the shrunken specimen used by
Rafinesque when establishing this genus for N. atherinoides; orca
– killer whale, the head of N. orca said to resemble that of a
dolphin (Scharpf 2005).

Characters
Maximum size: 74.4 mm
SL (Chernoff et al 1982).
Coloration: Generally
pallid with little pigmentation; Chernoff et al. (1982) suggested common
name of “phantom shiner” based partly on coloration of this species.
Preserved specimens: pale; sides with broad silvery band, as broad as length
of snout, bordered above by narrow plumbeous line; back sparsely covered
with fine dark punctulations, median line of back with a faint plumbeous
band; top of head dark, remainder silvery; pale underneath; fins pale (from
original description; Woolman 1894). No prominent lateral stripe extending
through eye; no caudal spot; no paired dots along lateral line (Hubbs et al.
2008). Peritoneum silvery (Chernoff et al. 1982).
Counts: Usually 8 anal
fin rays; 9 or 10 gill rakers on 1st arch; 14-16 gill rakers on 2nd
arch; 10 or 11 rakers on 3rd arch; pharyngeal teeth 2,4-4,2;
fewer than 45 lateral line scales (Hubbs et al. 2008). Pharyngeal teeth
2,4-4,2; 8 anal fin rays; 7 dorsal fin rays; scales 8-42-4 (from original
description; Woolman 1894).
Mouth position:
Terminal and oblique (Hubbs et al. 2008). Subinferior, little oblique, lower
jaw slightly included (from original description; Woolman 1894).
Body shape: Posterior
edge of jaw does not reach pupil; dorsal fin insertion well behind insertion
of pelvic fin, nearer base of caudal than snout; depth at occiput more than
width at occiput; eye small, contained about 3.5-4 times in body depth
(measured over curve); lower lip thin, without a fleshy lobe (Hubbs et al.
2008). Plump body, slightly compressed, with broad back and belly; dorsal
outline somewhat elevated; head heavy, snout blunt, decurved; eye small,
slightly shorter than snout; maxillary scarcely reaching vertical of pupil;
top of head unusually high and transversely rounded, eye is as near to the
lower as to the upper profile of the head; interorbital space wide and
convex, equal to distance from tip of snout to pupil; origin of dorsal fin a
little nearer snout than base of caudal, slightly behind insertion of
ventrals (from original description; Woolman 1894).
External morphology:
Lateral line complete; dorsal fin more triangular, last fin ray less than
one-half length of the longest; predorsal scales not crowded; first obvious
dorsal fin ray a thin splint, closely attached to the following well
developed but unbranched ray, especially at tip; lateral line usually not
decurved, either straight or with a broad arch; premaxillaries protractile;
upper lip separated from skin of snout by deep groove continuous across the
midline; cartilaginous ridge of lower jaw hardly evident and not separated
by a definite groove from the lower lip; distance from anal fin origin to
end of caudal peduncle goes 2.5 or fewer times in distance from tip of snout
to anal fin origin (Hubbs et al. 2008). Fins moderate; dorsal fin high and
falcate, with first rays longest, one and one-eighth in length of head, the
last rays less than half length of first; anal fin not as high, with longest
rays one and one-half in head and about twice as long as the last ray;
margin concave; pectorals slightly falcate, almost reaching ventrals, one
and one-half in head; ventrals short, 2 in head, not reaching vent; caudal
deeply forked, the middle rays two and one-half in longest lateral rays
(which are as long as head); scales large and thin; lateral line somewhat
decurved (from original description; Woolman 1894). Breeding adults with
many, irregularly arranged tubercles on head, snout, lips, gular and
branchiostegal regions, and breast; breeding males with well developed
tubercles over outer nine fin rays of pectoral fin, and tubercles may be
present on the thickened interradial membrane between these rays (after the
outermost ray) and small tubercles sometimes found on anterior edge of
dorsal and pelvic fins; breeding females sometimes with well developed,
irregularly placed tubercles on upper surface of pectoral fin (Chernoff et
al. 1982).
Internal morphology:
Pharyngeal arch slender; intestinal canal short, forming simple S-shaped
loop (Hubbs et al. 2008).
Distribution (Native and Introduced)
U.S. distribution:
Endemic to the Rio Grande from the mouth of the river at Boca Chica Beach,
Texas, to central New Mexico, including the mouth of the Pecos River
(Chernoff et al. 1982; Miller et al.1989).
Texas distribution:
Originally found throughout the Rio Grande (Chernoff et al. 1982; Edwards
2004).
Abundance/Conservation status (Federal, State, NGO)
Believed to be extinct
(Miller et al. 1989; Bestgen and Platania 1990; Propst 1999; Edwards et al.
2004; Scharpf 2005; Hubbs et al. 2008); however, it has been suggested that
species may still be extant as it was once widely distributed (Scharpf
2005). This species extirpated in the Rio Grande, New Mexico (Bestgen and
Platania 1990; Platania 1991); Notropis orca may have been prevented
from migrating to secure areas as a result of river desiccation, extreme
distance, or habitat desiccation due to construction of dams and were unable
to survive in reservoirs (Bestgen and Platania 1990). Miller et al. (1989)
noted that dams, water diversion, pollution and increased salinity along
with an abundance of introduced fishes brought about a significant decline
in abundance of Notropis orca, especially after 1940. The species was
considered endangered by Chernoff et al. (1982). Notropis orca was
last seen in 1975 when a single adult was collected from the Mexican side of
the lower Rio Grande (Chernoff et al. 1982; Miller et al. 1989).

Growth and Population
structure: Specimens from the two largest New Mexico collections had
mean lengths of 53.1 mm SL (39.5-70.1mm) and 61.8 mm SL (49.9-73.7 mm),
respectively, representing from two to three year-classes (Age I-III;
Bestgen and Platania 1990).

present in New Mexico collections (Bestgen and Platania 1990).

Phylogeny and morphologically similar fishes
Subgenus: Alburnops
(Scharpf 2005). Notropis orca closely related to the Pecos bluntnose
shiner (Notropis simus pecosensis) and the Rio Grande bluntnose
shiner (N. s. simus; Hubbs et al. 2008). Notropis orca differs
from Notropis simus in having 8 (usually) anal fin rays, 9 or 10 gill
rakers on the 1st arch, 14-16 gill rakers on the 2nd
arch, 10 or 11 gill rakers on the 3rd arch, slender pharyngeal
arch, and the posterior edge of jaw not reaching the pupil; while
Notropis simus has 9 or 10 (usually) anal fin rays, 6-8 gill rakers on
the 1st gill arch, 11-13 gill rakers on the 2nd
arch, 8 or 9 gill rakers on the 3rd arch, pharyngeal arch broad,
and the posterior edge of jaw under the pupil (Hubbs et al. 2008).

Notropis orca known to
hybridize with the Rio Grande bluntnose shiner (N. s. simus;
Chernoff et al. 1982).
Host Records
Commercial or Environmental Importance
Hybridization between
Notropis orca and the Rio Grande bluntnose shiner (N. simus simus,
subspecies of Notropis simus) may have occurred as a result of the
reduction in spawning sites and/or rarity of both species; whether
hybridization influenced the decline of this species is not known (Chernoff
et al. 1982; Miller et al. 1989).
