I, , am aware of the following hazards that may be encountered in conducting field work:
Animal pathogens (rabies, hantavirus, histoplasmosis, Lyme's disease, etc.)
Cuts/scratches (plants, rocks)
Dehydration
Falls (rocks, steep terrain)
Irritating/poisonous plants (poison ivy)
Plant toxins
Sunburn
Swift water (in seining)
Venomous animal sting/bite (bees, wasps, scorpions, spiders, snake bite, etc.)

In order to ensure that field experiences are reasonably safe and positive learning experiences, the following rules or procedures were adopted by the Biology Department at SWTSU:
1. Don't reach where you can't see
2. If the vegetation is higher than one foot, use a stick in front of where you
walk to check hidden hazards (Ex. snakes)
3. Wear good high-top walking/hiking shoes
4. Drink sufficient amounts of water (not caffeinated drinks)
5. Wear #25 waterproof sun block. Use as directed.
6. Wear wide-brim hat, long sleeves, long pants, sturdy protective footwear,
& thick socks
7. Insects

a. avoid wearing perfumed products
b. wear repellent with DEET <35%) or use "Bite Blocker"

8. Poison ivy/oak - use "Ivy Block"
9. No alcoholic drinks are permitted
9. Medical problems
If there are special medical needs that you feel might warrant attention, feel free to discuss your needs with the course instructor.
