Kindergarten
(K.1)Scientific processes. The student participates in classroom and field investigations following home
and school safety procedures. The student is expected to:
(A) demonstrate safe practices during classroom and field investigations;
6th Grade
(6.1)Scientific processes. The student conducts field and laboratory investigations using safe,
environmentally appropriate, and ethical practices.
The student is expected to:
(A) demonstrate safe practices during field and laboratory investigations; and
(B) make wise choices in the use and conservation of resources and the disposal or recycling of materials.
High School
IPC
(1) Scientific processes. The student, for at least 40% of instructional time, conducts field andlaboratory investigations using safe,
environmentally appropriate, and ethical practices.
The student is expected to:
(A) demonstrate safe practices during field and laboratory investigations; and
(B) make wise choices in the use and conservation of resources and the disposal or recycling of materials.
What does "conducts ...investigations using... environmentally appropriate & ethical practices" mean?
"Environmentally appropriate & ethical practices" means that the environment is not negatively impacted during science activities or investigations. This includes:
* not littering or polluting
* disturbing the environment as little as possible
Examples: If you look under a rock or a log, put it back down exactly where you picked it up w/ the same side down.
It means that a site is not "over-sampled" to the detriment of the habitat.
Don't hurt environmentally sensitive habitats such as sand dunes by walking or driving on them.
* properly disposing of materials - MSDSs prove dispoal information.
Example: Be careful of what you pour down the drain. Sometimes it depends upon whether you have a waste treatement system. Micro-chemistry significantly reduces the pollution problem.
There are many activities that use chemicals such as motor oil (for oil spill simulations) or corn starch or animal waste that are illegal to pour down the drain or can cause you to have plumbing problems.
* ethical treatment of animal & plants
Remember!
Waste is going somewhere!
