Management for Outdoor Activities
Obtain adminstrative permission for field activites prior to lesson planning.
Plan for placement of students who are disciplinary problems with the administration while you are outside with the rest of the class.
I. Prior to leaving classroom:
A. management
1. If this is a new activity, practice the activity by yourself and with a few students prior to using with a whole class.
2. Have all of the materials or equipment either already in place for use or ready to transport at the same time the students go outside.
3. If needed, assign/number/identify students with numbers or tags before leaving the classroom
4. Produce outside signs to remind students their grouping, where to meet or procedure (if necessary)
5. Assign a student leader (w/colored hang tag if needed) to lead students to activity site (if possible show/talk to leader before class)
6. Assign a student (w/colored hang tag if needed) to be the last in line to:
a. leave the room
b. shut locked door
c. place sign on door w/class location in case administrator, etc. comes to room to find a student/teacher
7. Teacher monitors student progression from a middle position in the line
B. Instruction
1. Review the prior knowledge or concepts needed to understand the concept that is to be learned with the outside activity.
2. Review the procedures for the activity before going outside while the students are seated and listening.
C. Review conduct rules immediatly BEFORE going outside
1. Stay in line
2. No talking inside school
3. Stay within the boundaries of activity site as set by teacher
4. Listen for instructions &/or nstruction outside
5. Look at teacher when whistle is blown or teacher calls for your attention
6. No horseplay
Loss of lab/field activity privilege WILL result when rules are not followed!
II. Outside
1. Constantly monitor the students keeping all of them in sight at all times.
2. Remove any student from the activity the FIRST time the student is off task.
