Exercise 5: Secondary Growth in Stems; The Root

In herbaceous plants, all of the tissues that make up the plant body are produced in apical meristems and are termed primary tissues. In woody plants, on the other hand, most of the tissues in the plant body are produced not by apical meristems, but by lateral meristems. These tissues are referred to as secondary tissues, and the increase in size that they cause is termed secondary growth.

In the first part of this week's lab, you will examine the internal structure of a woody dicot stem to help you understand the phenomenon of secondary growth. During the second part of the lab, you will examine the morphology and anatomy of the last of the vegetative organs of the plant body, the root.
