The Cell Cycle and Mitosis


An actively dividing cell follows a definite sequence of events as it reproduces. The three principal processes involved in cell reproduction are replication of the genetic material, division of the nucleus to form two genetically-identical daughter nuclei, and division of the cytoplasm to form two daughter cells. These processes are sometimes collectively referred to as the cell cycle.
