Supplemental Instruction (SI) Sessions for Bio 1431

Megan Banning is your SI leader

Meets Tuesday and Thursday 6:30 in Supp 435

The best way to use SI sessions is to treat them as study time for the exam. You can work with other students to learn the material for the exam. At these SI sessions, you can learn how to apply this material to answer questions similar to those on exams. My role is not to go over material in a lecture-type format. Rather, I can help small groups of students understand the material by applying the material to answer questions. This requires active learning on your part. Active learning is much more effective than passive, lecture-type presentations. Please take advantage of SI sessions, work together to understand the material. As you do so, you are studying for the exam in an effective and efficient manner.

Please bring your notes to SI sessions

Study Suggestions

Don't try to memorize!!! Understand concepts!!!!

For example, don't memorize stages of meiosis, instead think about in which stages genetic variation might arise and understand how and why

Do all assignments posted on blackboard

Go to SI sessions, work with others at SI sessions, ask questions at SI sessions.

Hints for taking Multiple Choice exams

Look at the choices. If four are about the same and the fifth is different, the different one might be the correct answer.

Go with your first choice. Try not to second guess yourself. Your first choice is usually correct.

Read the question and determine what I am asking.  Use the information in the question.

Be calm- Remember what you know
