Awards Day 2008

The Biology Department, on Friday, April 25, recognized outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in the department.
Presented by Dr. Joe Tomasso, the awards recognize academic excellence, research proficiency, and professional characteristics.

Academic Excellence Awards

Certificates for Academic Excellence are awarded to undergraduates with a GPA of 3.8 or higher on at least thirty Texas State credit hours and to graduate students with a Texas State GPA of 3.8 or higher on at least fifteen Texas State hours in their first three years of graduate study.

Department of Biology Awards

Certificate for Outstanding Service to the Department of Biology given to Elena Wisely and Christopher Wisely.

Department of Biology Colloquium Award to Cameron Collier (Undergraduate) and Jesse Becker (Graduate). The award is presented to the authors of the best undergraduate and graduate papers delivered at the annual Biology Department Colloquium.

Colene Drace Cell Biology Award to Nirmala Karunarathna. Awarded by the Biology Department to recognize exceptional research by a graduate student using the tools and techniques of cell biology.

George H. Meyer Award in Microbiology to Lindsey Wiggins and Andrew berger. Awarded by the Microbiology Program faculty in recognition of a research presentation at a meeting of the American Society for Microbiology. Established by Bernice Neumann in memory of her brother, Professor George H. Meyer.

William E. (Henry) Norris, Jr. Scholarship to Kristen Epp. Awarded by the Biology Department to recognize past and future contributions to the biological sciences by graduate students.

Chuck Nash Aquatic Studies Scholarship to Joshuah Perkin. Awarded by the Biology Department to provide financial support for full-time junior, senior or graduate students pursuing studies in Aquatic Biology.

Fred and Yetta Richan Aquatic Biology Awards to James Gaertner, Preston Bean, Kathleen Eggemeyer and Zachary Shattuck. Awarded to outstanding graduate students and undergraduates by the Aquatic Biology Program faculty in recognition of significant contributions to the program.

Howard D. Schulze Biology Scholarships to babur Mirza and Jesse Becker (Graduate) and Elena Wisely (Undergraduate). Awarded by the Biology Department for academic achievement and scholarship. The award was established by Christopher B. Schulze, M.D., in honor of his father.

A.B. and Irene Rogers Scholarship to Robert Maxwell. Awarded by the Biology Department to provide financial support for upper-level undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Aquatic Resources.

Sally Ann Karnau Scholarship to Sara Gillum. Awarded by the Biology Department to a junior or senior Biology major with demonstrated scholastic ability and financial need.

Premedical/Predental Society Scholarship to Jarryd Brennan. Awarded to a student accepted into medical or dental school in recognition of outstanding service to the Premedical/Predental Society and the Biology Department.

Science Education Award to Melissa Ponce. Awarded by the Science Education faculty in recognition of significant contributions to the program.

Charles Spurgeon Smith Award to Arturo Villarreal. Awarded by the Biology Department to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average.

Francis Rose Scholarship to Michelle Parmley, Julia Coyle and Mary Dobson. These grants provide research opportunities for undergraduates in the biological sciences during the academic year. The emphasis of this program is to increase the number of undergraduate students doing research. The grant program was created in 2006 to honor Dr. Francis Rose, who was the departmental chair for 11 years.

College of Science Awards

Outstanding Graduate Student Awarded to Allana Welsh Awarded to recognize a student majoring in a program within the College of Science who exhibits outstanding personal and professional characteristics in the areas of scholarship, research, teaching and service.

Houston-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Scholars is a National Science Foundation funded scholarship program (H-LSAMP) in the College of Science at Texas State awarded to Ugo Eziefule, Michelle Jackson, Puja Malani, James May, Yohantis Moore and Veronica Huerta. Structured as a community of scholars preparing for graduate school and professional careers, the H-LSAMP program is designed to substantially increase the diversity of students graduating with baccalaureate degrees in STEM fields - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
