Welcome to the Aquarena Wetlands Project at Texas State University and the Aquarena Center in San Marcos, Texas. The Biology Department and Aquatic Resources Program at Texas State University initiated the Wetlands Project to restore the Aquarena wetlands to their natural state and create an environmental education and research center to teach the public about the economic and ecological value of wetlands. Wetlands provide many ecological benefits including: habitat for a diverse community of plants and wildlife; water purification; erosion and sediment control; and diminished flooding. Unfortunately, wetlands are becoming increasingly rare. Over time, the wetlands at Aquarena were altered by human development and today the springs are in jeopardy. SWT, many community organizations, and dedicated individuals have recognized the need to restore and protect the remaining wetlands surrounding Aquarena Springs. The Wetlands Project seeks innovative ways to restore and protect native wildlife and promote educational opportunities for people of all ages. The Wetlands Project team is seeking partners from all walks of life to assist in achieving our long term goals. |

Partnerships and volunteer efforts will be integral in the restoration of the Aquarena Center. The Wetlands Project is drawing volunteers from area schools, local service organizations, and the public. Volunteers are currently assisting in the removal of exotic species, revegetation with native wetland plants, and trail construction. You too can become involved as a friend or volunteer. |
